Youth Prevention Universal

Universal prevention utilizes LifeSkills Training ™ (LST), which is a uniquely designed substance abuse program with a foundation on science. Rather than simply teaching information about drugs, LifeSkills combats the primary underlying causes of substance abuse use identified in over 20 years of research. LST uses lectures discussions, coaching, and practice - and is taught to 3rd through 8th graders. Three main components to address substance use: drug resistance, personal self-management, and general social skills.

The Second Step Violence Prevention program uses curriculum that addresses the issue of interpersonal violence among adolescents. It is designed to reduce their impulsive and aggressive behavior and increase their level of social competence through empathy training, interpersonal problem solving, behavioral skills training and anger management.

Youth Prevention Selective

Selective prevention strategies utilize the Strengthening Families curriculum for ages 10 – 14. This program is for children at risk, such as those whose parents are in treatment or who have other risk factors. We plan to have a Strengthening Families program available specifically for Mexican Americans and this would encompass children ages 6 – 14. This is a 6 – 7 week course that will be offered at select sites in all of our counties. The Kid Connection is a curriculum for children ages 10 – 14.

Youth Prevention Indicated

Youth Prevention Intervention programs offer constructive methods designed to interrupt the onset or progression of substance abuse in the early stages. Star Council facilitates the Toward No Drug Abuse to high school youth exhibiting high risk behaviors.

Toward No Drug Abuse (TND) is a highly interactive program targeting high-school youth to help them resist substance use. Twelve 40-50 minute lessons include motivational activities, social skills training, and decision making components that are delivered through group discussions, games, role playing exercises, videos and student worksheets. TND is taught in schools in the counties STAR Council serves and through court-ordered groups such as truancy and probation. TND aims to help youth grasp common misconceptions, understand consequences, correct myths and make commitments concerning substance abuse.

All of our programs listed above are a Center for Substance Abuse Prevention Model Program (CSAP) TRY – Treatment Youth Services Treatment youth services provide supportive outpatient services to youth ages 13 – 17. These services empower clients and their families to recover from the effects of chemical dependency. Age and gender appropriate programs and services that address addiction, sexual abuse, self-esteem, victimization, risky behaviors, and wellness are provided to participants. Specialized programs and services are available for females with unique needs.
