Prevention Specialist

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform responsible alcohol, tobacco, and other drug education, information, individual and group facilitation, including planning, organizing, directing and implementing programs.

  • Prepare and conduct prevention programs and services for youth and adults and referral sources.

  • Plan, develop, and facilitate group activities.

  • Prepare all documentation and reports required for program compliance in a timely manner.

  • The education, information, and group presentations may require standing up to eight hours per day.

  • During the summer months you may be exposed to excessive heat and strenuous physical activities (conducting sports and educational activities).    

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. 

  • Education and/or Experience: Graduation from an accredited college or university with degree in social services related area and/or graduation from an accredited high school with a minimum of two years in the field of substance abuse or related social services.

  • Certification Required: Willingness to work towards an Associate Prevention Specialist (APS) certification, at a minimum. To be completed within 1 year.

  • Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  • Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have working knowledge Email/Web Internet software; Excel Spreadsheets Spreadsheet software and Microsoft Word software.

  • Position Specific: Knowledge of alcohol and drug abuse and its physiological and social effects. Strong knowledge of prevention strategies. Must have excellent verbal and written skills. Must work well and relate well to individuals and groups. Must have the ability to establish rapport with clients and community. Basic knowledge of community resources. Knowledge of adolescent development and willingness to work with youth population.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Additional Details: 

  • Reports To: Director of Prevention Services

  • FLSA Status:  non-Exempt

  • Salary: $35,000

  • Location: Decatur

  • Hours: 8 am – 5 pm, Monday through Friday, some weekends for events.
